Saint John Chrysostom earned his title “Golden Mouth” through sermons that pierced hearts and defended the poor. Raised in Antioch and trained in classical rhetoric, he brought eloquence and pastoral warmth to the ambo, inviting hearers to real repentance.
As Archbishop of Constantinople, he confronted corruption and called the wealthy to mercy. His candor drew imperial anger, leading to exile and suffering. Yet even from banishment he wrote letters of encouragement that continue to comfort the faithful.
His commentary on Scripture and the anaphora that bears his name remain pillars of Orthodox worship. In every age the Church hears his voice reminding believers that fasting and prayer must blossom into generous love.

Grace shining forth from your mouth like a beacon has illumined the universe. It has shone to the world the riches of poverty; it has revealed to us the heights of humility. Teaching us by your words, Father John Chrysostom, intercede before the Word, Christ our God, to save our souls.
