Supporting Catechumens Through Great Lent

1 min read

Great Lent is the catechumen’s home stretch. Parishes should schedule weekly mentor touchpoints to discuss fasting challenges, spiritual warfare, and practical needs. Provide written guides for the scrutiny prayers and exorcism services so catechumens understand what they hear.

Encourage deeper participation in the Presanctified Liturgy and the Akathist to the Theotokos. Offer rides or childcare so no catechumen misses these formative gatherings. Clergy can host post-service debriefs, answering theological questions sparked by hymnography.

Nutrition and health matter. Help catechumens craft manageable fasting plans, especially if they have medical considerations or strenuous jobs. Share recipes, shopping lists, and AthonApp meal planners that rotate simple, nourishing dishes.

Spiritual warfare often intensifies. Equip mentors with pastoral talking points, recommend specific psalms, and invite catechumens to submit prayer requests anonymously. Organize parish prayer chains to uphold them during the final weeks before baptism or chrismation.

Integrate acts of mercy. Pair catechumens with parish ministries so they experience almsgiving firsthand—serving food pantries, writing cards to the homebound, or supporting crisis pregnancies.

Finally, celebrate victories. Host a Lazarus Saturday brunch, present catechumens with icons of their patrons, and rehearse the baptismal service. The combination of teaching, worship, and community makes Great Lent a season of profound transformation.
