Saint Demetrios served as a military commander in Thessaloniki. When ordered to persecute Christians, he instead taught the faith openly, preparing catechumens despite imperial threats.
Imprisoned by Emperor Maximian, he blessed the young Nestor to defeat the gladiator Lyaeus. Demetrios was speared in his cell, but miracles and a fragrant myrrh flowed from his tomb, healing the sick.
His relics continue to stream myrrh, and his patronage is sought by cities facing war or calamity. He calls believers to bravery rooted in the Cross.
Troparion
The world has found you as a great defense in times of peril, O victor Martyr Demetrios. You routed the nations, for you were a man of might. Therefore as you destroyed the pride of Lyaeus in the stadium, O Holy One, entreat Christ God to grant us great mercy.
Kontakion
God, who has given you invincible might, has tinged the Church with streams of your blood, Demetrios! He preserves your city from harm, for you are its foundation.
