Hearing the Gospel call to sell all and follow Christ, Anthony withdrew into the Egyptian desert where he embraced prayer, fasting, and unceasing watchfulness. Demons assailed him, yet he endured through the power of the Cross and constant invocation of the Lord.
Disciples soon gathered around his cave, forming the first monastic communities. Anthony taught that salvation requires both inner stillness and active charity, sending monks back to cities to help the poor while guarding their hearts in prayer.
Even emperors sought his counsel, but Anthony remained rooted in simplicity. His life, recorded by Saint Athanasius, still inspires Orthodox Christians to carve out silence and trust God’s providence more than worldly security.

You imitated the zealous Elijah, you followed the Baptist in his upright ways; you founded a desert dwelling and confirmed the world by your prayers. Father Anthony, intercede with Christ our God that our souls may be saved.

You rejected the troubles of this world and completed your life in quiet, imitating the Baptist in every way. With him we honor you, most venerable Father Anthony.
