Bible Verses for Grief and Hope in Christ

Read these passages at mercy meals, parish grief support groups, or when visiting those who mourn. Pair each verse with short prayers from the Panikhida.

  1. #1 — Psalm 22(23):4

    “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me.”

  2. #2 — Psalm 115(116):15

    “Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints.”

  3. #3 — Wisdom of Solomon 3:1-3

    “The souls of the righteous are in the hand of God, and no torment shall touch them.”

  4. #4 — John 11:25-26

    ““I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in Me, though he die, yet shall he live.””

  5. #5 — 1 Thessalonians 4:13-14

    “Do not grieve as others do who have no hope… God will bring with Him those who have fallen asleep in Jesus.”

    “Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on… they may rest from their labors, and their works follow them.”

Invite mourners to light a candle after each verse, saying the departed person’s name and the refrain “Memory eternal.”

Liturgical connection: Ideal for 40-day memorials, grief counseling sessions, and All Souls Saturdays.
