Bible Verses on Comfort in Suffering

These passages are drawn from the Psalms, the Prophets, and the New Testament readings chanted at services for the sick. Share them with parishioners who need consolation and pray them slowly with the Jesus Prayer.

  1. #1 — Psalm 33(34):18

    “The Lord is near to the brokenhearted, and He saves the contrite in spirit.”

    Used in the Orthodox funeral service to proclaim God's nearness in grief.

    “A sacrifice to God is a broken spirit; a broken and humbled heart God will not despise.”

  3. #3 — Isaiah 43:2

Invite the faithful to repeat the refrain "The Lord is near" between each verse. Pair the reading with lighting a vigil lamp at the icon corner to embody the promise of divine consolation.
